As a student of art history I
have always been drawn to the strong foreshortening of Mantegna’s Lamentation
of Christ.  When I saw a friend drying
out after a swim in the same pose it seemed like the perfect compositional
choice to depict a Sage.  Much more akin
to Manet’s portrayal of the same subject there is no overt mysticism or
spirituality.  He is simply a
contemporary character completely at ease in his surroundings.
