THREE SMALL GRACES

The Fool represents young women who will face life’s challenges and must triumph. He embodies trust and helps them move into the future with child-like simplicity.  The three small Graces are goddesses of charm, beauty and joy and the balloons remind us that youth is ephemeral and we all, indeed, grow up.

VOICE OF EVIL (REVISITED)

In the late 19th century in France puritan thought was that all evil was sexual.  The original Voice of Evil depicted lesbian love infused with a delicate and subtle eroticism very much at odds with the prevailing values of the time.  My how the world has change!  Pretty much anything between consenting adults is allowed today.

DOG DAYS

From the Halcyon Days series.  We feel we can live forever and all things are possible.  The dog is an archetypal companion that directs and protects possibly from the goddess of the dead (or is that really just Hofman’s Rubber Duck?).

WHAT NOW

The Seeker is always searching for something that will satisfy.  Is it the chaotic sexuality of the mischievous monkey or the sublime sensuality of the tango.  He is a voyeur who examines his own participation in the world, as he observes the activities of others.  Does the mask conceal his true nature from others or from himself?

GIRAFFES

The formative years are a time of curiosity and learning.  A time to linger unafraid in the perfection of childhood.  Giraffes can be messengers, offering protection but bringing visions of the future.  They also symbolize temperance, humility, moderation and stamina -- all useful traits on the march to adulthood.

THERE BE DRAGONS

Dragons are guardians of treasure and keepers of secrets.  They have great wisdom and clairvoyant powers.  In myths, maidens were often captured by dragons and required rescuing.  Here she looks like she can vanquish evil and rescue herself.

GARDEN OF GOOD & EVIL

The passage between childhood and adulthood is fraught with peril.  However, accompanied by her 'hemzad' and a wise and cunning serpent she is powerful.  Is that a malevolent clown offering her the forbidden fruit of knowledge or a benevolent fool the white rose of innocence?  Perhaps he is a link between the perfection of childhood and the reality of adulthood.
