HERE KITTY KITTY!

The Halcyon Days of childhood are a time of curiosity and learning. A time filled with optimism and trust as one begins the Hero’s journey. Armed with the right weapons, the world is an exciting and wonderous place. (Note: this is also a memorial to Katje, the wonderful Calgary zoo tiger who passed away a few weeks ago and who was the model for this painting).

THREE GRACES

The Three Graces are the mythological daughters of Zeus and Hera and represent among other things, splendor, good cheer and festivity. They preside over banquets and gatherings to delight the guests of the gods. Their main role was to bestow beauty, charm and goodness on young women and to give joy to people in general.

BIRDS OF HAPPINESS

Japan is a beautiful country filled with culture and tradition. In Japanese folklore, the crane is a mystical creature believed to live for a thousand years and represents good fortune and longevity. It is referred to as the “bird of happiness”.  Japanese kimonos are both a traditional art form and a piece of clothing. Today Japanese people rarely wear kimonos in everyday life reserving them for special occasions. However, it is very common to see tourists in Kyoto rent a kimono and spend the day strolling around in it. These young women in Kyoto are surrounded by happiness.

DIVE IN!

You can’t cross the sea by standing and staring at the water. Life passes very swiftly and soon you have reached the age where anything can happen. While it is true our expectations diminish as we age, we can still accomplish great things. We just have to be prepared to dive in and try.

STEP RIGHT UP

Games of skill are a rite of passage for teenage boys – shooting hoops, shooting pool, shooting targets – to name a few. They provide the opportunity to develop skills and confidence while in the safety of the family nest. In the game of life skills are important but luck also plays a role. Sometimes you aim at the target, sometimes you are the target. Step right up, come on in, and take your chances!

WATCHING

The well-known Serenity Prayer offers this homily: Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.  Alcohol, friends and music help as well. So I sit here, enjoying the cabaret accompanied by my feline companion and adult beverage, watching all the lonely people go by.

ANIMAL PORTRAITS

Two years ago I had the opportunity to visit Tanzania and came back with thousands of photos. I have been using them to play with composition and design elements. While they are not really part of the Blueridge Myths narrative, they were fun to do and I hope you enjoy them.

THE KING

Max Beckmann painted his version of ‘The King’ in Germany in 1933, the year that Hitler came to power. He repainted it in 1937 after he was exiled from his native land and declared a ‘degenerate’ artist.  His work was always political, but the true narrative was often hidden, and we can only speculate on the meaning. Does the narrative ask what if Fools were Kings and Justice blind or is it just an alpha male and his fantasy. Possibly a parable to today’s times? The lens of history through which paintings are viewed can change the narrative significantly.
